In 2006, Anacostia Watershed Restoration Partnership (AWRP) was created with a continued commitment to carry out the Anacostia Six-Point Action Plan. The Partnership is the collaboration between governments, communities and the private sector for shared restoration efforts to recreate the watershed as an asset. The key elements of the Partnership are the 1) Steering Committee, 2) Management Committee, and 3) Community Advisory Committee. In 1990, the first Anacostia restoration project was completed. By the end of 2018, there are well over 9,000 projects in the ground. The Partnership has contributed greatly to the success of this conservation effort and improving this amenity for the community.
With the completion of the Anacostia watershed restoration plan (AWP) in 2010, the Steering Committee's principal purpose is to guide policy, program and financial oversight; and implement the AWP and other plans for the ecological restoration and protection of the Anacostia watershed. The Steering Committee sets the overall direction of the Partnership and establishes the overall objectives. The Community Advisory Committee are made up of watershed residents and stewards that advocate for the restoration of the watershed.
The Steering Committee meets quarterly at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG).
