Almost 30 years ago, the first Anacostia stormwater project was completed. Now, there are well over 9,000 completed projects in the watershed. The restoration of the Anacostia watershed continues as a complex, long-term, expensive, yet necessary task. Today, the Partnership continues its mission to tackle the pressing issues such as stream sediment and trash loadings, high bacterial levels, source tracking for toxics, stormwater management controls and streambank stabilization throughout the developed areas of the watershed.
The backdrop for all of this is water quality improvement efforts and how it pertains to all the communities that use and play in the Anacostia stream valley and river park corridors. The Partnership is the collaboration between governments, communities and the private sector for shared restoration efforts to enhance such recreational usage in this environmental arena. Over the many years, the Partnership has contributed greatly to the success of this conservation effort and enhancing this amenity to the community.
I invite you to peruse this site and then get out into the Anacostia watershed to view our successes and enjoy its recreational opportunities. Understand that this is a long-term process and there remain challenges ahead. Help the Partnership look forward to completing its mission as we are committed towards a "Fishable and Swimmable" Anacostia Watershed.
